Karate for Kids

Abstract

Karate for Kids

Do you know how many pounds it takes to break a karate board? It takes twenty-four
pounds to break a two-foot karate board. Could these forces over time injure the hands and feet?
If these injuries can hurt adults, could these be even worse for kids? Are physical injuries the
only risk? Are martial arts helpful or hurtful for kids?
Martial arts have been around since 3000 BC. It was originally developed in Eastern Asia as a fighting skill. Most types involved weapons. In the twentieth century, it has evolved to non-contact forms that are popular to families. Some forms are even in the Olympic games. These forms do not involve weapons, but often involve techniques to focus strength such as board breaking. Students learn concentrate and focus on the center of a board while kicking or chopping a board to break is without injury. Some students may get an injury if done incorrectly.
Today the noncontact forms have focused on self-defense, exercise, and spiritual development. These are benefits for people of all ages. Most kids will learn self-discipline, self-control, improved mental concentration, and learn respect. These benefits lead to better performance in school and better health. Exercise includes fitness tests and training drills that improve strength and endurance.
All of these benefits have led to studies to studies that have proven the value of martial arts to children. The American Academy of Pediatrics has even recommended martial arts for some childhood disorders. These disorders include anxiety, autism, ADHD, behavioral problems, and sensory processing disorders. Parents of these children report better focus with activities. Better focus in school leading to better grades for many children, and better performance in many activities in life.
Some forms of martial arts involve risk to injuries to areas of the body. One of these risk is injuries to themselves or others. Some injuries are minor such as scrapes, bruises, or cuts. Some can be serious injuries to the head or neck can occur during competitions or sparring. These injuries could be to others if not disciplined in the techniques and when to use them appropriately.
Martial arts can be helpful or harmful to kids. Contact forms can cause injuries to kids and others. Noncontact forms can minimize injuries and offer benefits to health both physically, and mentally. Many kids can improve focus and performance in school. Most experts recommend martial arts for kids to improve their health with very little risk in noncontact forms.
