The Family Secret

Abstract

Liam, strong willed warrior. That’s the meaning of my name and I live up to that. My family comes from a long line of wizards, like 13452BC long line. Mainly males. There aren’t very many females born in the family and no one will tell me why. I wish I knew. My sister, Autumn, is one of nine females that were born into my family, the rest were married in.
“Liam can you please answer the question?” Professor Michaelson huffs. “Oh! Uh, yeah. What was the question again?” I say startled from my thoughts. “I asked you what you add to an Invisibility Potion to turn it in to a Sleeping Elixir.” Michaelson says clearly annoyed. “You add 5 lilies, 2 frog eyes, and 7 newt tails.” I reply. “Good. Five points to your team. You’re lucky you knew, or I would have taken 70 points from you and your team.” Michaelson says icily. Then, the class bell rings. “I thought Michaelson’s class would never end. Thank goodness he didn’t take 70 points from our team we would have had negative ten.” Corey sighed, “You’re lucky you know every book front to back.” Corey may be one of my best friends but, sometimes he points out the obvious. That can be helpful sometimes, but most of the time it’s just flat out annoying. Soon, Orpheus joins us. “Wow, who knew Spears’ class could be so tough.” Spears teaches Defense Against Dark Wizardry. “Let’s just relax and go to lunch then, go to the team dorm.” Corey says with his mind on food. On our way we met Athena, also a team member, and talk to her about Astronomy. Once we get to lunch, we sat down at the team table. 5 minutes later, the headmistress walks in, which starts the lunch feast. I dig into the chicken and mashed potatoes, after that the feast disappears and the headmistress stands up, “I have an announcement to make, once you go to your team’s dorm you must decide a name. Start with small suggestions then decide. Now off with you!” We all head off.
The portrait of Sir William the Destroyer blocks the hole to the dorm, he asks us for a password. “Pumpkin Snickerdoodles.” Athena says. The portrait swings open and reveals the big tunnel that leads to our dorm. We all sit down in the common area and wait for the rest of the team. There are 6 teams in the school. Our school is called Axfalcon School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Sorry if I didn’t mention that before. “Okay people, time to decide! We’ll start with suggestion from the first years, then the second year, and so on and so forth.” Announces Corey’s older brother Christopher. The first years are 11 so, kind of immature. They suggest names like squid wars, or blibbityblobbity. So, no help there. Then, the second years continue the trend. Now, Christopher is getting mad, mad. Finally, it’s the third years’ turn. My grade. We are working on a decision, between Noble Wolves or Wolves of the Noble. Corey then yells, “Chris! Which one do you like better? Noble Wolves or Wolves of the Noble?” Chris responds with, “Corey at school you call me Christopher. Anyway, Noble Wolves sounds the best.” Our colors are silver and gold.
We all head down to dinner, as always, the Phoenix Post comes. My neon orange phoenix lands by my plate and drops 5 letters on my lap. I give him a marshmallow I found in my pocket. Sunset was not very happy. He flew off with the rest of the phoenix. The first letter I opened was from my mother. She was asking if I felt weird lately, and to send a reply as soon as possible. The next 4 letters were just from my brother, sister, and dad. So, the dinner feast starts and ends faster than usual. When, I get up to the dorm I start feeling weird. “Liam, where are you?” Corey calls.
I wake up in the medicine wing. When I go to speak a bark comes out. I hop out of bed, and I feel closer to the ground than usual. I walk towards the mirror that sits on the wall. Once I get to the mirror, I see a great black lab staring back at me. I don’t know what to do or what to say. I wander over to find the school nurse. She tells me that my family comes from a long line of shapeshifters. After I learn to transform back, I run to tell Corey, Orpheus, and Athena. I showed them I could transform.
Then, I headed to class with Orpheus. “I can’t believe I can do this! I didn’t even know about this family secret. I should do some research on this whole shapeshifter thing. I wonder why my parents never told me this, there must be SOMETHING that kept them from telling me. Can my sister do this too?” I ranted to Orpheus. “Give it a break, Liam. If you talk about this too much…...certain people, if they even are people, will come for you. So, be extremely careful who you tell.” Orpheus whispers to me. “But Orpheus,” I whisper back, “why will people come for me?” He hesitates, “It’s because, you…you aren’t the same as everyone else. There is a very bad group of people called the Shapehunters, they hunt people like you, Liam. You need to realize that there are not so great people out there. So, promise me you’ll be safe.” Orpheus mutters. “I promise I will stay safe.” I whispered back. “Ok, see ya!” Orpheus yells to me as he goes to Mr. Michaelson’s class. I stay put pondering everything Orpheus said. How did he know about the Shapehunters? That was the only question on my mind, how did Orpheus know. I walked into the library and dug into hundreds of books to figure out more on shapeshifters. To be continued…….
