The Missing by Addie Bailey

Abstract

When I got home that evening the news was on, just as I was about to turn it off the reporter said that another kid went missing. That’s the third kid this month I thought to myself. I was scared because nothing ever happens in Kansas City. We don’t know how this is happening, we don’t know where there going. My parents are afraid because all the kids are around my age. I’m afraid for my little sister, I know how to fight and she is helpless.
I decided to quit watching the news. I thought it would help me sleep better at night, all it did was make me more paranoid on who would be at school. After I final got some sleep, I woke up in a jolt. I heard a noise from outside, I looked out my window and saw a huge truck. I thought nothing of it because there was a fair coming to town. Which I was excited since my friends, and I were going. Just then a thought crossed my mind what if I show up to school tomorrow and there not there.
I woke up after struggling to go back to sleep with those thoughts bouncing around in my head. As I walked downstairs to get breakfast a sickly feeling hit me. I blew it off since my teacher was giving us our essay prompts today. When I got on the bus I noticed that not many people where there, Oh well I told myself. Only when we passed my friends house without stopping was I getting concerned. He never misses the bus he has perfect attendance.
When we got to school, I met up with my friends. I asked them what happed to Zeke. They asked me if I’ve watched the news lately. “I’m trying to stay away from the news science it has been scaring me lately.” I said in reply. “They took him.” Aundrea said with a voice crack of sorrow. I knew what she meant. I replied then with a faint oh.
On our way back my little sister pointed out that there was a black van with balloons. I told Anjelica they were there to help set up for the October fair. I thought it was sketchy too, but I didn’t want her to freak out. Later when we got home Anjelica ran to her room to work on homework. I told my mom that I was going to go hang out with my friends. I left to go check out the balloon situation at the fair.
When I arrived, he looked like he was legit. I offered to help him, and he accepted. After we were done, I asked him about Jim. Jim was the guy who normally sets up the balloons. Here in Kansas City the town I live in everyone knows everyone. This guy was not known, he was new. He told me his name was Derrick. After we talked, he offered to drive me home. I declined since he was the new guy.
The next day and every day after that I would go down to help Derrick set up. “Hey I can’t reach the balloons back there, can you get them for me Jake.” Derrick asked. “Sure, just give me a sec.” I answered. Before I could even look to see that the van was empty he held a rag up to my nose. It was chloroform, just before I was knocked out, he shoved me in the van and drove off. When I came to, I was in a basement it wasn’t that big, but it was big. After I calmed down enough, I put the puzzle pieces together Derrick was the reason kids were going missing.
Derrick was walking down the stairs only this didn’t look like Derrick. “Sorry if I startled you, Jake.” He must have seen me jump. He brought me some food it was a bowl of pretzels and water. “My name isn’t Derrick I’m sorry I lied to you and the disguise was to trick you to sorry about that.” He sounded so fake. “My name is actually Theodor, you can call me Theo.” Theo is tall, he looks to be in his late 20’s, he approaches me calmly its so confusing. I then go on to ask him why he was taking all these kids. Looks me in the eyes it was so intense till he turns around to leave. When he reaches the door, he ends the suspenseful silence with saying “Why does anyone do anything.”
As he closed the door I looked around. There was only one way to escape that wasn’t through the bolted door and that was through the window. When he came back down he told me there is no way to escape, and if I yelled no one would hear me. “If you let me go now, I won’t go to the police, I’ll keep my mouth closed, I promise.” As I took a look around it hit me, this is where all the other kids where held hostage. “What happened to the other kids.” Theo left with out telling me.
After several days of nothing happening Theo comes to check on me. After a while of silence the door up stairs opens. Theos room mate starts talking to the police, in panic Theo runs up stairs to see what was happening. In all the chaos Theo left the door open, after a few seconds he’s still up there. I run up the stairs quietly and when I saw the cops, I started yelling to get their attention. They look over at me and then start running quickly over to me. They ask me who I am, and what happened to me. After answering their questions, they took me home where I was reunited with my mom, dad, and Anjelica, my friends asked if I was okay. Nothing was ever going to be the same ever again in this town.
