Don't Judge a Book by its Cover

Abstract

Have you ever heard someone say, "Don't judge a book by its cover"? I have a story to share with you about two lambs named "ltsy" and "Bitsy". I am sure you have already assumed that "Itsy" and "Bitsy" are tiny lambs because of their names, but sometimes things aren't always what they seem. I live on a farm and raise sheep. In addition to raising lambs, I am a 4-H member and love to show lambs.
First of all, I have a very special ewe, Breena. I didn't think she was pregnant so she wasn't in the "watch pen" with the rest of the expecting ewes. One frosty and chilly morning before I came to school, Breena surprised me by giving birth to a set of twin ewe lambs. These were the tiniest lambs that I have ever seen born, and we weren't sure they would live. As a result, my sister and I named them "Itsy" and "Bitsy". Breena didn't have a lot of milk for her two lambs, so we had to give them bottles of milk to help them survive.
As you can imagine, these two petite ewe lambs needed a lot of extra encouragement and care to grow. They were so miniature that my sister and I could pick them up, and we had room to keep them warm in our coveralls! Our dad didn't like us to carry them around in our coveralls; he was afraid they would slide and fall down the coverall legs and hit the ground.
"Itsy" and "Bitsy" enjoyed playing hide and seek with their mother. They enjoyed running and jumping when we turned them outside in the sunshine.
In the meantime, we had friends and family stop by to see all of our lambs. They often said, look at those two runts in the pen- they won't amount to anything. My sister and I secretly knew our love for those tiny lambs was grand, and those two tiny lambs would do great things in the future. The days passed by quickly, and we taught "Itsy" and "Bitsy" how to stand tall and brace in the show ring. We were determined to prove everyone wrong and show the world that "Itsy" and "Bitsy" were special!
We took those two unique lambs to our county fair for their first show. People walked by our pen and admired "ltsy" and "Bitsy". They were amazed with the quality of both of the lambs and wanted to know where we had bought them. My sister and I proudly stated, "We raised them ourselves." Our lambs didn't win overall champion, but they did win blue ribbons.
Next, we convinced our parents to take us to the state fair so we could show "Itsy" and "Bitsy". By this time, word had spread about these tiny lambs that had grown into magnificent animals, and everyone was coming by our pen to check them out! We even had a newspaper editor stop and ask questions about "Itsy" and "Bitsy". He wanted to publish a story about how we had never given up hope on them! We couldn't believe it, "ltsy" and "Bitsy" were going to be famous and be in the newspaper!
After the article was published, we decided to attend a national show with "Itsy" and
"Bitsy". We packed our clothes and our show trailer and headed to Louisville, Kentucky to show on famous green shavings. "ltsy" and "Bitsy" were well-known and their story had made
headlines everywhere. My sister and I were super proud of our hard work and dedication in
raising "ltsy" and "Bitsy". We never gave up on them even though other people said they would never grow.
We walked onto those green shavings as proud as peacocks. "Itsy" and "Bitsy" knew this was a really big, important show. They held their heads high and did exactly what my sister and I had taught them at home. The judge was impressed with our lambs. He awarded Grand
Champion to "ltsy" and Reserve Grand Champion to "Bitsy". My sister and I cried tears of joywe had done it! We hadn't "judged a book by its cover". Even though our lambs were born tiny, we knew they were bound for greatness!
