Abstract
It all started in Pittsfield, Massachusetts whjch held the first county fair in the nation in 1807. Trus was the brainchild of Franklin Watson. It as now known as the Berkshire County fair. The first year was practically just a sheep shearing contest and competition. Although the entire "county fair" idea itself was the brainchild of Franklin Watson, the event idea of sheep shearing was created by Elkanah Watson, which consisted of the entire county fair. Elkanah 's goal with this was to do produce better farming practices. When Elkanah saw this as an interest. he began to add activities for the whole family. such as baking contests.
By the mid 1800's, county fairs were beginning to spread across the Midwest. This was a rut! County fairs began to spread across the country quickly. The purpose of all of these county fairs still circles back to agriculture. The entire purpose was to expose their community to agriculture and the agricultw-e industry. Specifically, agriculture native to home.
In the past hundreds of years, county fairs have changed a lot. There are several more attractions since the original sheep shearing. Within all of these attractions, people forget the real meaning of the county fair. Go expose yourself to agriculture!
