Abstract

Hi, today we are going to talk about the Corp of dscovery. This was a wild and dangerous trip which Lewis and Clark were willing to take to bring something new to this wonderful country. Did yu know Jefferson wrote a letter to Congress about the Corp of discovery? Thomas Jefferson wanted the Native Americans to stop hunting and start farming and doing things their way because that was gonna be easier for them and he would have more power over them. Thomas Jefferson wanted to become friends with the Native Americans. The hunting life will then become useless, and they will see an advantage in exhanging them for farms. Now you're wondering well I though the whole thing was about Lewis and Clark it wasn't just them there was plenty of more men for this big 2-year expedition. Also there was a Native American girl named Sacagawea, who was good help too Lewis and Clark. Thomas Jefferson wanted to expand the US. In order to do this, Thomas Jefferson bought the Louisiana Purchase from France which cost $15 million. Thomas Jefferson picked Lewis because he knew Lewis' family and Lewis worked for him. Lewis picked clark because he knew him in the military. In the military Clark was in charge. Lewis was just in charge of theis trip so Clark was not, but they kept that a secret from the men that way they would get the same respect. To prepare, Lewis took science classes about plants and animals and learned how to make maps, that's how he prepared. Lewis went shopping tin Philadelphia to get supplies for his crew and to trade with the natives. Some of the supplies that Lewis got fo rthe natives were glass beads, elephant tusk combs, silverware, and brass thimbles. the some of the supplies for his crew were flour, portable soup, ground corn, and oilskin. Addition of trading things they would give the Natives Americans peace medals. On those medals were Thomas Jefferson and two hands 1 hand of Thomas Jefferson and 1 hand of a peaceful Native American. They got to the Columbia River and met some more Natives. The Natives new Lewis and Clark were friendly because they had Sacagawea. lark said in his notes a woman in a party of men is a token of peace. Lewis bought salmon from the Natives. When they got to the end of the Columbia, they thought it was the Pacific Ociean; but the truth is it was still the Columbia. Clark found the pacific with a little crew the next day. the whole crew started to build cabins for the winter. In the spring they began the journey back home. They went down the Columbia, Missouri, Mississippi, to campwood.
